Good News Items

  •  Thank you to Kathy MacDonald and Steve Blair for all their work on scheduling
    • Brad has not slept well, worrying about allotment, etc.
      • They deserve a big round of applause!
  • Marty Tedrow has won a Kennan fellowship (she was dropped last year) NC A&T kept her as a research teacher...She was considered a professor at A&T,  lots of networking possibilities, paid her $10,000.00!
    • She applied again, and she won.  The perks of being a Kennan fellow are great--there are several awards for different subjects too.  She teaches new curriculum that comes out in 2012.  She got a new laptop, flip camera, and nice stipend too.  See Ms. Tedrow for more details:  http://www.ncsu.edu/kenanfellows/

  • Brad is leaving on Wednesday with the Samurai's and won't be back till Friday

  • Congratulations to four very talented young ladies accepted as "emerging leaders"
    • 6th grader--Adriana Cummings
    • Three 7th Graders:
      • Keenan Carter, Kaitlyn Chesney and Starnese Galloway
  • Regan Rutland was accepted and will attend the Junior Western Region Honors Orchestra Clinic:

SIT NEWS--Brent Atkinson:
SIT:  revisiting our technology plan...talking about using monies for computers (laptops) more so than classroom solutions, people are really using the Dell Mini carts--will continue to be discussed at SIT--tell your SIT represenative your opinion.

Leigh Humphrey:  TAC meeting summary/the budget
  • Last Thursday from WSFCS Info--link to the survey your choices for taking a furlough day --would be June 17th--has to be this year, that law expires this year...other option 1/3% to 1% cut in your pay (may be up to 2%)
    • Or you could say you prefer to lay off 42 workers...
    • Dr. Martin's number 1 priority is to save jobs
    • 60 assistants were cut, period, some maybe hired back as media assistants
    • TA's and PRT's working less days,
    • Attempt was really made to spread the wealth of the cuts around

  • One voice rally in Raleigh  is on Tuesday, May 3rd...4:30
  • Running some buses from across from Parkland, K-mart
Calendar from 2012-2013 is a disaster because the way the calendar falls
Leigh will forward that to you all when he gets that calendar...

QUESTIONS:  Is the payroll "vote" one or the other? Brad thought it was both?  Brent--it's asking your opinion--this is really not a "vote" per se.

Daryle Maxwell from LEAP is here to talk about Their Program at Kennedy Learning Center (will be a career/technical High school next year too--adding 9th and 10th grades)
  • Daryle Maxwell/KennedyLC/WSFCS@WSFCS
  • LEAP -- are recruiting students now
  • LEAP designed for students retained in the past who want to do two grades in one year. 
  • Traditionally accepted students proficient in EOG's.
  • Gateway program designed for students not proficient, smaller class sizes, reading/math focused
  • Study skills and after school tutoring
  • Looking for low discipline problems, tho discipline problems do tend to lower in this smaller setting
  • lower motivated, high achievement students are candidates too
  • Daryl is speaking to teachers to refer these students
  • referral process is streamlined,  all they need us a student name and student number, and LEAP (Daryle) will contact the parents from there.
  • They do take EC, and they are inclusive...
  • Leap does provide transportation
  • They are adding 9th and 10th grades to their campus
  • Questions?
    • They do have had students who failed twice, and they have to be very motivated...
    • Fill out the form and can send inter-office mail

Allotment Meetings

He is meeting tomorrow (for as long as you have questions) come to his office...

He does not have school money to hire Sara :(  Still might be worth it to write to school board members to express your opinions--that may help...

Instant Recess:  Ends May 6th
  • hope you have kept logs, need to be turned in by Monday, May 9th
  • Visitors in the building tomorrow--someone from Wake to see how instant recess is going.
  • May 9th we will return to the normal bell schedule

Good News:
Brent:  SIT meetings moment:

  • SIT voted to have instant recess at the start of the day--some kinks,  same ones all the time?,  talking to Eric...maybe a Theme each Day .
  • will run on channel 13 from now on...
  • We are one meeting away from turning over to a new set of SIT reps
    • Let people know if you are interested...
    • SIT is a great place to have your voice heard.
    • Talk  at grade level or encore meeting if you are interested
  • This month's MVP:  We will have a meeting next Monday, if you know someone who has gone the extra mile...Remember MVP is not just for teachers, classified personnel are also eligible.
Kottenbrock
  •  Safety/Lock down: what if a child "falls out"/needs help attention in an emergency?
    • They have added an addendum/protocol to the emergency action plan in the event of an emergency like this.
  • Also, trying to develop a plan for an unruly child during an emergency.
  • All outside access doors need to be closed...all outside access doors...
  • Chick-Fil-A Spirit night will be May 19th, and should be many opportunities for folks to participate
College Fund--Wilson Moore
  • Not just for African American students anymore
  • This is an important program to Dr.Martin
  • Asking every person on the middle school level to contribute something/anything
  • Dr. Montague-Davis will be coordinating this effort for the district
  • Wilson Moore is a recipient of this fund, so it is near and dear to her heart/ it changed her life.
  • Ms. Cummings and Wilson-Moore are organizing, and you will receive a contribution form in your box by Wednesday 4/13
  • Patriots Pals is this Thursday--look for the announcement for a location, if you are a sponsor--please try and attend with your men tee

National Junior Honor's Society Induction is this week

students have a 3.75 or better GPA
Practice is this Thursday...Friday--they will  line up at 9:30
Speaker is a Sophmore at Yale from WS/FCS and should be inspirational!

Candi Fernandez

  • EOQ booklets due to her by Friday, Remove the front cover. 
    • Please call first or come by at the end of the day,  Candi will be out of her office doing Extend 2 testing this week
      • 22 students--8 different testing sessions
      • 6th grade math, 7th reading, 8th science
      • E-mail has all the details
  • Extend 1 testing begins April 26th--about five students (Ms.Scott)
  • EOG gateways are eliminated  (Be aware for parent questions--Here is a guide to FAQ about the EOG requirement)
  • no longer used for promotion
  • We will retest (red zone/green zone)
  • Can NOT retake EOG  to improve grade if they get a three or a four
  • EOG will represent 25% of their final grade
  • At Thursday's grade level has a conversion of the scale score (linked here) to a numeric grade
  • Percentile is not the grade, just a rank
  • Will work similar to how Algebra EOC tests worked in the past.
  • lowest F is a 60
  • will get a copy of scale conversion at grade level meetings
  • absent students--will get a lowest of the grades--a 60
VOCATS  (CTE) testing will also be tied to their final grade.

He is not hiding anything...Steve Blair gave Brad his first numbers as of today and will soon start scheduling, but not made one decision about placements yet.  There will have to be adjustments.  If Brad has to move someone will first have a conversation.  He is pretty sure everyone who wants to be back can come back...

Extra curricular activity sponsors for next year?:  A questionnaire asking about your strengths will be sent--may get called into action.

Magazine sales are way down...drastically...

  • Westmoreland is working with new sales guy--looking at alternatives...They will be giving out prizes in next couple of weeks

 OCR:

Investigation not of our school...but the process of looking at the number of African American males disproportionately suspended.
List of those chooses was random and sent my central office.
They did end up wanting to talk to kids, which was a change from before
They were allowed to interview in a group setting...student council
Thanks to Leigh Walters and Daniel Bryant who helped compile the data for Brad at grade levels
Brad welcomes any discussion that will give insight to this disproportionate suspension rate.
